Session Descriptions:
"Incorporating Inclusive Practices in Standard Programming" -
In this presentation, Sr. Behavior Specialist Katie Just will outline the Inclusion Aide program and ways in which the Recreation Department of the City of Fort Collins has aimed to create programs, spaces, and opportunities for participants with varying support needs. Session attendees will gain ideas on how to create more inclusive spaces within existing programming, how to improve sensory supports in facilities, and how to support participants at their level of functioning.
This holistic approach will also discuss interdepartmental collaboration and how to encourage caregivers to play an active role in the support of their participant while also aiming for increased independence and autonomy. Session attendees will have the opportunity to share their stories and experiences in order to brainstorm solutions while networking with other professionals who are working in similar fields and with similar participants’ support needs.
"Ability Awareness Training" -
The City of Colorado Springs Therapeutic Recreation Program's Ability Awareness Training was developed to help gain a better understanding and acceptance of individuals with disabilities. Training focuses on how one's language, attitude, and bias might impact someone with a disability as well as tips and techniques to interacting with a wide variety of disability diagnoses appropriately. Through lecture materials, discussion, and hands-on simulations, participants will be able to grow their own awareness for individuals with disabilities.
