TRSC Fall Workshop: Access and AI

The Therapeutic Recreation Society of Colorado (TRSC) is inviting you to their fall workshop happening on Friday, October 2nd from 11:45am-4:30pm. This workshop, "Access and AI" will included two CEU-certified sessions plus lunch and networking. This workshop will take place at the Moorhead Recreation Center in Aurora, CO. The registration includes the lunch and 0.3 CEUs (pending).

Session #1: "Colorado Digital Accessibility Requirements" presented by William Flowers, Website and Digital Accessibility Coordinator for the City of Aurora. 

Session Description:

Attendees will be provided with an overview of current Colorado legal requirements related to digital accessibility. Topics will include what types of communication technology are covered by the law, what types of assistive technology are used by the disability community, and how this all connects with federal requirements.

Speaker Bio:

Will Flowers is the Website and Digital Accessibility Coordinator for the city of Aurora, Co. His career has included roles as an ADA Coordinator, a director of accessibility services in higher education, a certified testing provider, and a creative writing instructor.

Session #2: "Integrating Generative AI into Community Therapeutic Recreation Services" presented by Susan Purrington, PhD, CTRS, Harold F. Wiley Generative AI Teaching and Learning Fellow, Connecticut College

Session Description:

This 2.5-hour workshop introduces recreational therapists to the ethical and practical dimensions of integrating generative AI into community-based therapeutic recreation service delivery. Participants will examine how generative AI tools can support core therapeutic recreation functions for clients of diverse abilities across community settings. Leisure education is addressed as one component within this broader community-based practice framework. The session addresses critical considerations including digital equity, privacy and safety, over-dependence, and quality control of AI-generated content, with case studies from inpatient rehabilitation (community reintegration), community mental health, and school-based therapeutic recreation settings, grounded in the NCTRC Job Analysis Study's call for comprehensive, community-based service delivery.

Speaker Bio:

Susan Purrington, PhD, CTRS, is the Harold F. Wiley Generative AI Teaching and Learning Fellow at Connecticut College. A leader in AI integration in recreational therapy and higher education, she created the nation's first AI literacy course for leisure and recreation ("AI and the Future of Fun") and developed "RT Buddy," a chatbot for RT professionals. As an AI Ethics & Integration Consultant, she has presented on AI in education and therapeutic recreation internationally. She holds multiple AI and teaching certifications and chairs the American Therapeutic Recreation Association's AI Task Force. Her work bridges cutting-edge AI technology with practical applications in education, therapeutic recreation, and inclusive learning.
